Goodwill Message from the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service on the Occasion of the 100th Anniversary of Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital
On behalf of the Ghana Health Service, and in my capacity as the Director-General, I extend my warmest congratulations and heartfelt appreciation to the management, staff , retirees , partners, and the entire hospital community of the Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital as you commemorate 100 years of dedicated service to child health in Ghana.
A centenary is a rare and remarkable achievement for any institution. It represents not only longevity but a sustained legacy of sacrifice, learning, resilience, and impact. For a full century, this hospital has stood as one of the most important pillars of paediatric care in our health system—offering lifesaving services, comfort, and hope to countless children and families, many of whom arrived in moments of deep vulnerability.
As the foremost child health facility within our service, Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital has played a critical role in shaping paediatric care delivery in Ghana. From emergency care to outpatient services, from nutrition interventions to the management of infectious and non-communicable childhood conditions, the hospital has remained steadfast in its mandate despite evolving public health challenges.
We in the Ghana Health Service recognize that this achievement has not come without significant challenges. Over the years, the hospital has had to operate under conditions of high patient load, infrastructural pressures, workforce constraints, and the growing complexity of child health needs in an urbanizing environment. Yet, what continues to distinguish this institution is not the absence of challenges, but the resilience, dedication, and professionalism of the men and women who continue to serve within its walls.
To the doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, allied health professionals, support staff, and administrators—your commitment has ensured that the hospital remains a place of healing and hope. Your work embodies the very essence of public service: compassion in action, often under demanding circumstances.
As we celebrate this milestone, the Ghana Health Service also takes this moment to reaffirm our commitment to strengthening paediatric and neonatal health services across the country. We are committed to supporting improvements in infrastructure, enhancing human resource capacity, expanding training opportunities, and improving access to essential equipment and supplies. Our shared vision is to ensure that every child in Ghana receives quality, equitable, and timely healthcare, regardless of location or background.
This centenary should also serve as a moment of reflection and renewal. It is an opportunity to look back with pride, but also to look forward with determination. The future of child health in Ghana demands innovation, stronger systems, and deeper collaboration. It demands that we continue to build on the strong foundation that institutions like this hospital have laid over the past 100 years.
To the leadership of the hospital, I encourage you to continue fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement. To staff, I encourage you to remain steadfast in your dedication, knowing that your work has a lasting impact on families and communities across the country.
