GOODWILL MESSAGE FROM THE PAEDIATRIC SOCIETY OF GHANA ON THE OCCASION OF THE CENTENARY CELEBRATION OF PRINCESS MARIE LOUISE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

On behalf of the Paediatric Society of Ghana (PSG), I bring warm greetings and heartfelt congratulations to Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital on the celebration of its 100th anniversary. This is a special and historic moment. One hundred years of service to children, families, and the nation is no small achievement. 

Since its establishment in 1926, Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital has remained a strong and trusted name in child health care in Ghana. Over the years, the Hospital has provided care, comfort, hope, and healing to many generations of children.    

As a Society, we are proud to celebrate with an institution that has played such an important role in the story of child health in Ghana. Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital is not only known for caring for sick children; it is also known for its contribution to child health knowledge, training, and service. Its work in general paediatric care, newborn care, nutrition rehabilitation, child welfare, and special clinics for conditions such as sickle cell disease, asthma, developmental conditions, and other childhood illnesses continues to touch many lives.
A very important part of the Hospital’s history is its link with Dr. Cicely Delphine Williams, a pioneer in child health and one of the early figures whose work helped shape tropical paediatrics and mother-and-child health. Her work at Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital, especially in relation to kwashiorkor, remains a major part of Ghana’s contribution to global child health. This history reminds us that the Hospital has not only served children in Ghana but has also contributed to knowledge that has benefited children beyond our borders.

It is also fitting to recognise the Cicely Williams Memorial Lecture, which continues to honour her legacy by bringing health professionals, partners, and stakeholders together to reflect on important child health issues. The Lecture is a reminder that improving child health requires learning, partnership, commitment, and action. The theme of partnership is especially important, because no single institution can meet all the health needs of children alone.
The Paediatric Society of Ghana warmly recalls the Hospital’s shared work with the Society in promoting newborn health, particularly through awareness activities on neonatal jaundice, birth asphyxia and others. These efforts have helped to raise public awareness, support staff training, and strengthen newborn care through the mobilisation of vital phototherapy equipment. Such collaboration shows what can be achieved when institutions work together with one purpose: to give every child a better chance to survive, grow, and thrive.

As we celebrate this milestone, we also honour the many people whose hard work has brought the Hospital this far. We acknowledge the past and present medical superintendents, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory staff, nutritionists, administrators, support staff, partners, and all others who have served this institution with dedication. Their sacrifice, commitment, and love for children have helped to build the strong legacy we are celebrating today.
The Paediatric Society of Ghana believes that the health and wellbeing of children must remain a national priority. The next hundred years will require even stronger commitment to quality care, child health advocacy, training, research, and partnerships. We therefore reaffirm our readiness to continue working with Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital, the Ghana Health Service, and all partners who share the goal of improving the lives of children in Ghana.

To the Management, Advisory Board, staff, partners, and friends of Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital, we say congratulations. Your work has made a difference, and your legacy is one that Ghana can be proud of.
On this memorable occasion, may the centenary celebration not only honour the past, but also inspire a future of renewed service, growth, and greater impact for children and families.
